Top Ten Tips To Prevent Frozen Pipes And To Keep Warm This Winter

With weather reports suggesting a cold snap is on its way, leading East Yorkshire plumbing and heating firm J Hart is urging both businesses and members of the public to make sure they are prepared in order to prevent frozen pipes and to keep warm this winter!

Jonny Hart, director of J Hart Plumbing, Heating and Bathrooms, says we need to be ready for whatever comes our way.

Here he gives his top 10 tips to ensure you won’t get caught out:

Top Ten Tips To Prevent Frozen Pipes

1. Insulation: Check all exposed pipework is sufficiently lagged, which means it must be wrapped in suitable material to protect it from freezing.

2. Stop cock / stop tap: Make sure you know exactly where your isolation tap is to turn your water off if the unexpected does happen.

3. Winter holiday: It’s very important to always leave heating on a frost protection setting and turn off mains water.

4. Servicing: Have your gas appliance checked and serviced by a reputable Gas Safe company.

5. Antifreeze: For holiday home, i.e. caravans and cabins make sure the heating system is protected with the correct dose of good quality antifreeze.

6. Fuel levels: If your fuel is stored as in oil tanks or LPG gas tanks make sure you keep them topped up. In extreme cases we have known remote properties struggle to have fuel delivered.

7. Keep the heat in: If your home is well insulated and has modern double glazing we recommend you keep your heating on constant, this keeps the fabric of the home at a stable temperature and prevents peak demands to reheat the home, helping you save on fuel.

8. Appliances: Is your boiler up to standard and energy efficient? Not only will it save on fuel but also reduces your carbon footprint and helps our environment.

9. External water pipes and taps: If possible, isolate and drain down any pipework from the garden, outhouses and garages and remove any water that is left in the system.

10. Tank: On older open vented systems tanks will be positioned in your loft space. Make sure the tanks are fitted with a tight fitting lid and are thoroughly covered with insulation and that all pipework in the loft is insulated. We have seen tanks frozen solid.

And just when you think it’s safe, don’t forget to prepare for the thaw that comes after the freezing temperature. That’s when more damage can occur.
